Crews battling Preble County house fire

Firefighters from multiple jurisdictions are battling a wind-fueled fire at a home on Sweet Potato Ridge Road northwest of Brookville.

A ladder truck was brought in from Englewood just after 5 p.m. to help Verona firefighters and others who have been fighting the blaze for over an hour.

No injuries have been reported and it is unknown how many people were in the home when the fire began.

Crews had to truck water in to the rural location and were punching holes in the roof to vent the fire.

Ask officials for ID, Shelby sheriff tells residents

A recent incident involving a person who posed as a child care worker has prompted the Shelby County Sheriff's Office to advise residents to get into the habit of asking any service related worker for identification before allowing the person into a residence.

Wednesday, Sheriff John Lenhart said his office received a call on Tuesday regarding a male who said he was a children services worker in the county.

The male, dressed in business casual clothing, was let into the residence after he said he was with Shelby County Children Services. The resident did not ask to see identification or obtain the male's name, according to the sheriff's office.

The male was described as a stockily built white and in his 30s, about 5-feet-8 inches tall and 200 pounds. He wore a military style haircut, which was short and dark, and had no facial hair. He drove what was described as a newer black four-door Chrysler Sebring or Chrysler 300, according to the sheriff's office.

"We would like to remind all residents that any service related worker will always have identification on them. Do not hesitate to ask for their ID's before letting them in your home," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "Law enforcement and children services will always produce identification when asked and most often will be together."

Residents are asked to report any suspicious activity to the sheriff's office at (937) 498-1111.

Boy struck by car on Troy Street

A 9-year-old boy who witnesses and police said was hit by a car Wednesday afternoon after he apparently darted into the street from between two parked cars was being evaluated at Dayton Children's Medical Center.

According to police, the incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. in the 600 block of Troy Street, near the intersection with Ray Street.

A woman was driving the car that hit the boy had two small children with her and they reportedly became hysterical after the impact left the windshield of the car cracked.

A second child who was hysterical was put into an ambulance just to calm him down. The only child taken to the hospital was the one who was hit.

"A lot of passers-by saw the boy fly up in the air," a witness, Jackie Lovelock, told News Center 7's Letitia Perry.  "Everybody's just praying for the boy now to make sure he's OK and his family, too ."
